Indecision is exhausting.
It presents as 1) a very busy mind that’s never still, 2) lots of confusion, 3) poor sleep, 4) overeating, overNetflixing, over-scrolling, and 5) emotional reactivity.
Most physicians solve for indecision by working harder, researching more, consuming more books, talking it through to all the people, sleeping on it, taking a class, “giving it more time,” and overthinking again.
The answer to indecision is NOT more work, information, or time.
The answer is to DECIDE.
In last week’s episode we discussed a 5-step process to get to ZERO decision drama.
This week we talk what to do if you literally can’t make a decision right now:
DECIDE to box up the indecision. This IS a decision.
Here’s exactly what I do: I put my indecision and all the associated thoughts and feelings into a metaphorical Tiffany’s Box on my desk. I know it’s there, I know I’ll get to it, and I’ll give myself space to figure it all out. I only allow myself to entertain the issue at my weekly private coaching session with my coach. This way, I have a mind expert to help me investigate my thoughts and NOT get lost on the spin and despair.
When I open the box, I have a decision waiting for me.
I didn’t have to think 24/7 on it. I don’t lose any sleep. I just had to lovingly put it in a box. Constrain the indecision. Let my brain rest.

Instead of enjoying our dream vacation in the Bahamas…we’re worrying about a disaster work schedule that hasn’t even happened yet. We’d never bring our boss on vacation with us intentionally, and yet here she is in our mind 24/7 in the Caribbean. Yuck.

Sure, being the boss’ favorite has its perks.
Of course, it’s fun. Except when it’s not.
If we only feel good when the boss is gushing over us, we DON’T learn the skill of how to take care of ourselves.
It’s easy to feel forgotten when we aren’t mentioned at faculty meeting…when she does NOT stop by to say Hi…or when she stops nominating us to her friends.
The solution is NOT to work harder.

131: how to be enough

Stop waiting on the boss to tell you that you work hard enough.
It's not happening. No matter how hard you try.
You could sleep 5h/night, go to all the grand round lectures, host all the faculty candidate dinners, go to each holiday dinner at her house, write 9 papers a year, miss your own colonoscopy to pick up a service day, and she will still have ideas on how you can do more. She might even suggest you delay your promotion by a year so your colleagues don’t feel jealous. True story.
Of course it would be amazing for her to say, “Congratulations you have done enough. You should slow down and rest- you earned it!”
BUT, since she won’t EVER say this, the solution is to DECIDE that you are enough.
“You ARE enough” is a DECISION you get to make.
You are enough. Just as you are. Without any more papers or dinners. Exactly as you are right this second.
You get to believe whatever you want about yourself.
DECIDE that you are enough.
Believing that you are NOT enough, will have you waiting for the boss’s approval (it’s not coming), overworking, and skipping your own colonoscopy.
Believing in yourself is actually LESS work.
When you believe you are enough, you’ll feel better, lighter, and your mind will be clearer.
You’ll get more done in half the time.
You’ll have more time to snuggle the kids.
More time to do nothing in particular.
Empty, white space. Open calendars. NO meetings.
It starts with DECIDING you are enough just as you are.
From this place you can create more, if you want to. But this is where you start. This is where you bring your brain back to when you are feeling sad, defeated, or small. Come back to this place right exactly here.
You ARE enough.
Just as you are.
Just EXACTLY as you are.

You aren't one of them.
All senior leaders are white men.
You aren't.
These differences CANNOT hold you back from asking for a better schedule.
You CAN ask for what you deserve No Matter What.
Start with agreeing with yourself: Your boss has favorites, you aren't one of them, all senior leaders are white men. These are FACTS. Don't make yourself wrong. Your brain is right about ALL OF IT.
Now we get to work on getting what you deserve.
Agree with yourself. Support yourself. Make yourself right.
This will create instant relief. This opens up energy that you can direct to getting what you deserve in less time than you think.
Action is so much easier when you are on your own side.

"But what if I can."
The first response of any human brain is usually “no” followed by all the reasons why something can’t possibly work and YOU can’t possibly do it.
Expect the resistance.
It means you have a normal human brain, just like mine.
Avoid the urge to believe your brain and quit on yourself. Quitting is basic. You are not.
Meet your brain with this new sentence: "But what if I can."
Let this sentence open you up to possibility.
Let the possibility show you all the options, help you take your next step, and then go out in the world and CREATE the results that will build your belief IN YOU.
Every time your brain says you can’t, keep bringing your brain back to “but what if I can.”
Because here’s the stone-cold truth:
You totally can.

Brains love evidence, plans that make sense, & pubmed citations.
Of course, data can be great. Except when it's not there.
Depending on data can also limit you.
When we only create based on what already exists, we get stuck creating more of the same.
We don't allow ourselves create something entirely new; we don't allow ourselves create something entirely better.
This week I teach how to leave room for the magic.
I share three stories of how leaving space for the magic created BETTER results.
Story 1: My goal was to create $100,000 my first year of coaching. At month 10 I had created $55,000. My brain wanted to give up because there was no sensible way to create $45,000 in 2 months at the rate I was going. AND I did it anyway because I learned to leave room for the magic.
Where are you holding yourself back because you don't have proof? Telling yourself you can't have your dream because it's impossible?
In this week's show, I teach that you CAN get to your desired result without the evidence.
If you're creating something entirely new, you actually are REQUIRED to create without any evidence.
It will require more of yourself than quitting. Quitting is easy. Becoming the person who never quits on herself is POWERFUL.
It will require you to go off course when there is no well marked path. You will create your own path. Your path will be better.
It will require you to steer your brain back to possibility when life feels impossible.
It will require you to trust yourself more than numbers.
It will require you to dig deep and find brilliant solutions, new ideas, and possibility.
All of this is in you already.
You are ready.

Life is hard is a fact. Most of us get stuck trying to resist the hard by saying "it should NOT be hard" or "if my boss would only support me it wouldn't be so hard."
The resisting of the Hard is where it's easy to feel powerless.
